Squash Crops
I've included all members of the squash or cucurbit family
here. All of them tend to be heavy feeders enjoying the extra dob
of compost around the roots, and really do well in warm weather.
They tend to take over more than their fair share of the garden,
but can be tamed back by using bush varieties or trellising up fences
or teepee structures. Cukes will keep on producing the more you
pick, but leave those storage squash and pumpkins on the vine as long
as you can.

EARLY RUSSIAN (Pickling)

Canadian gardening history going many decades back. Skins are deep

excellent dills.

BOOTHBY'S BLONDE (Pickling)

transplant. Boothby's is by far my favourite cucumber! Nice
and sweet flavour that is refreshingly juicy but crisp. Skin is a
creamy blonde colour, and fruits are ideally harvested at the 5" stage.
Overgrown fruits are lovely in Lady Ashburnham pickles - a
Carleton County standard relish.

Winter Squash
LESTER'S SQUASH
Certified Organic
100 days. Calling all Buttercup lovers!
Lester's Squash combines the best of both
worlds as a cross between
Burgess Buttercup and Turk's Turban. Fruits exhibit a rainbow of
colours and excellent keeping qualities from their Turk's parent. The
Buttercup side gives them their "wheel" shape with that lovely, deep
orange flesh loaded with rich
flavour. Fruits are generally 1lb+, growing on vigorous trailing
vines that often root at the leaf nodes. Plants require
considerable water, and organic mulch helps greatly. The fun part
of growing Lester's Squash is watching the fruits develop into their
different colours and patterns - very rewarding! This is a local
heirloom from Brighton Botanicals of Upper Brighton, NB. Grower
Pam Trenholm brings this variety to HSP after many years of cultivating
it with her father, Lester Wheeler, after whom the squash is named.
If you're a Buttercup devotee, then give Lester's a try!

minutes for those who remember the squash at the last minute (like
me!). 9 seeds/gram.
