2201-UT  Brassica napus var. pabularia

21 days baby leaves, 50 days mature.

Red Russian was the first seed I ever saved en masse and it has held a special place in my garden ever since. Kale is an excellent leafy green that adds texture, colour, and nutrition to spring salad-mixes. Baby leaves are nice and tender, and excellent raw. Older leaves are a nice chopped green—we substitute kale for spinach in our lasagna recipe. Of course, kale is a first-choice fall green, as older leaves sweeten up with frost.

The images, at right, show the plant at baby, medium and mature leaf stage.

~400 seeds/g

This kale is amazing, and perfect for the home garden. It grows very quickly and is so sturdy that even if accidentally left uncovered over the winter (not that I've done this, of course...), it still grows green as soon as the spring thaw rolls around. The only real pests I've noticed are cabbage moth/worms, but a row cover solves that. This kale is one of my all-time favourite greens - it's fast, tasty, incredibly easy to grow, and so sturdy that even completely neglected they're hard to kill.
And, like noted in the description above, it substitutes wonderfully for other greens in pasta dishes. Yum!
