A perennial herb with a long history of therapeutic and culinary uses. Also known as “the bouillon cube herb”. The leaves can be used like celery or parsley, the flowers attract beneficial insects, and the seeds taste something like fennel. (It’s said that early New Englanders would keep themselves alert during long church services by chewing on the seeds or candied roots.)Hardy down to Zone 3 and deer-proof! What’s not to love about lovage?

I was fortunate to be given a couple of plants. It is also a wonderfully well behaved plant and the soft green could fit anywhere in a garden. Beautiful in any soup.
