Perennial Flowers
Aquilegia vulgaris - COLUMBINE "Grannie's Bonnets"
An
old-fashioned type of columbine brought to the Maritimes by early
settlers and now naturalized here. It is really one of our
prettiest wildflowers. The original seed for this strain came
from Peggy Adams of Granville Ferry, NS, but these lovely flowers can
be found in New Brunswick and Preince Edward island, also. Plants
grow to about 3-4' high and bear single, short-spurred blossoms of a
rich purple of sometimes pink or white.

Clematis tangutica - CLEMATIS
"Tibetan Clematis; Golden Lantern Vine"
Clematis is a Greed word for climbing plant and this one can reach 15' or more! Tangutica
means "of Gansu", an area between Tibet and Mongola, where this species
originated. This perennial climber is a vigorous grower and
blooms late in the summer through fall. It has finely divided
foliage and nodding yellow, lantern-shaped flowers, followed by fluffy
silvery seed heads that last well into winter. Useful for
covering a fence, or as a ground cover on a slope. Tolerates a
wide ramge of soils but prefers sun, unlike its more common cousins.

Dianthus barbatus - SWEET WILLIAM "Peabody"
From the Greek Di (of Zeus or love) and anthos (a flower) and barbatus (bearded), this favourite old-time flower is aptly named. To be a "flower of the gods" is a great honour for the Dianthus family! This is really a biennial that rarely lives beyond 2 years. The Dianthus
family originated in Europe, Russia, and the Mediterranean region.
This strain comes from Woodstock, NB, and given by a member of
the Peabody family to the Hoyt Experimental Station where this seed was
obtained. It is very robust with tall erect stems and bright,
bold-coloured flowers in pinks, deep reds, and white mixes.

Digitalis - FOXGLOVE "Sutton's Apricot"
The
common name Foxglove is traced back to the fox's glew, an ancient
musical instrument that was decorated with floral garlands for special
celebrations. Native to central Europe, this Digitalis is
a true perennial. Lovely bell-shaped flowers of pale pinks, blush
and orange appear every year as the 3' high plants self-seed easily.
On old-time garden favourite and a really beautiful flower.
Caution: Digitalis is toxic, so use discretion when gardening with young children.
