Oh, those Spring Treats!  The first salads of the season are better than any candy I can think of...well, pretty close anyway!  Hope Seeds is offering 3 new salad mixes this year including a Spicy Greens, Mild Greens and Gourmet Lettuce Mix.  Keep in mind that many of the lettuces can be grown as a "come and cut again" crop as well.  Get your seed in the ground as early as soil can be worked (many varieties have a tough time germinating in soil temp above 24 degrees C), or get a jump on the season and start plants indoors 4-6 weeks before planting out.  Space lettuce for heads 8-12" apart, and sow salad mixes at about 60 seeds/foot.

GIANT WINTER                                                                                         Certified Organic 
50 days.  An open-pollinated spinach that has recently been recovered from just a few seeds!  Selected for cold hardiness, Giant Winter bears a heavy crop in the field, greenhouse, or under row cover.

BLACK SEEDED SIMPSON (Green leaf)                                  Certified Organic
28 days baby, 45 days full size.  Quickly matures into a green, frilly-leafed head.  Tolerates heat and sun, making Black Seeded Simpson a good choice for summer-long planting.

55 days full size.  Slowest bolting red leaf lettuce, with compact fringed heads.

28 days baby, 50 days full size.  Leaves have a deeply-lobed oak-leaf shape with light green colour.  No bitterness in warm weather.

28 days.  A unique blend of various colours and shaped lettuces is a beautiful addition to any meal.  No brassicas in this mix for those who have flea beetle pressure.  Harvest baby leaves by cutting 1-2" above the soil line and allow new leaves to grow for a return trip.  Plant every 3 weeks during the season for continued harvest.

21 days.  Ferme de la cooperative Tourne-Sol has refined this brassica greens mix to contain a variety of colours but only a little bit of bite!  Great to use in a CSA or market greens production.

ARUGULA                                                                              Certified Organic
21 days.  Ferme de la cooperative Tourne-Sol uses this arugula as a standard on their farm.  Coming from a combination of arugula varieties, it has a moderate spice and is nice as a cutting green in a salad mix, or by itself at the larger leaf stage.

CRESS / PEPPERGRASS                                              
21 days baby.  A fast-growing green that pops up in about 24 hours.  Use it as a "come and cut again" green, or harvest as full heads.  Peppery flavour, a nice inclusion in salads.

BATAVIAN ENDIVE                                              
70 days.  A cool-season crop that should be started 4-6 weeks before last frost and thinned to 9".  Tie outer leaves over the core as chlorophyll in the leaves causes a bitter flavour.  This variety has an indented leaf with a sharper taste.
