Cucumbers are just one member of the cucurbitacea family (others being melons, squash, pumpkins, etc.). They are generally heavy feeders, enjoying the extra dob of compost around the roots, and really do well in warm weather. They tend to take over more than their fair share of the garden, but can be tamed back by using bush varieties or trellising up fences or teepee structures. Cukes will keep on producing, the more you pick.
